About this work

Description

He appears very short in stature and poses in the short spangled costume of a French showgirl or 'soubrette'. 'Maurice' has autographed this real photographic postcard with the name Lilly-Armand Maurice, and written a message on the back. He was a female impersonator on the French music-hall stage, billed as 'L'homme Protée', implying that he was a quick-change artist.
