The following description was provided by James Gardiner: "Concert party on HMS Ark Royal, a merchant ship converted to an aircraft carrier, which took part in the Gallipoli and Turkish campaigns in World War I and the early 1920s. The central figure appears to be dressed as Mustafa Kemal Pasha, the Turkish military hero and (later) ''founder' of modern Turkey"
