About this work

Description

Circulated (14 December, 1944) by Frank Hartley (TRC Secretary), a copied extract from the Daily Sketch newspaper: "Life-Saving Secret Held Up By Cost". Hartley remarks that the report refers to "the important extraction process, which representatives of the Shell Development Company have been trying to sell in this country." The newspaper refers to the "colossal price" and observes that co-operation between American and British manufacturers "does not apply to companies which normally do not make penicillin."

24 November, 1944. Letter from H Jephcott (Glaxo) to T R G Bennett, enclosing "for your information, and perhaps amusement, copies of the Shell Development contract as used in America". Jephcott adds, "I am quite certain they will not propose anything just the same for this country." A copy draft contact (licensee details blank) is attached. "Concurrently with the execution and delivery of this letter agreement you will pay us the sum of $50,000.00, which sum shall be credited against any royalties accruing under the license hereinafter referred to, but shall not otherwise be refunded to you or be available as a credit in any circumstances."
