Biographical note
Alison, William Pulteney (1790-1859), physician and social reformer, born near Edinburgh. He studied medicine at Edinburgh University. In 1815, Alison was appointed physician to the New Town Dispensary in Edinburgh. Many of his patients came from the poorest sections of society. This developed his interest in the health and conditions of the poor. In 1855, Alison suffered from frequent epileptic attacks, which meant he had to retire. He died in 1859. A full description of his life and work is to be found in the Dictionary of National Biography.
