Correspondence relating to joint research projects with other scientists and organisations in the virology field. Correspondence mostly relates to a collaborative trial on colds and psychology with Carnegie-Mellon University, Pittsburgh.

Dr Sheldon Cohen from Carnegie-Mellon University and Andrew Smith (MRC Perceptual and Cognitive Performance Unit) conducted psychological tests at the CCU to establish whether human factors, such as stress, place individuals at a higher risk of catching a cold. Volunteers were asked to complete questionnaires on their tendency towards anxiety, including questions on their work, social life and general mood. The trial also considered the impact of habitual substance use and lifestyle, analysing the impact of smoking and alcohol on susceptibility to colds.
