Biographical note
Accum, Friedrich Christian (1769-1838), was a chemist, born in Bückeburg, Westphalia. After achool, he was apprenticed to the Brande family pharmacy at Hanover. He then moved to London and worked in a London pharmacy. In 1800, Accum set up his own business in Soho, where he supplied chemicals and apparatus. He developed an expertise in gas lighting.
