Biographical note
Initially part of the Company of Barber-Surgeons, the Company of Surgeons was formed as a break away movement in 1745. It was granted a royal charter in 1800 and became the Royal College of Surgeons in London, later of England. Avery Jones was granted Honorary Fellowship of the College in 1981, he also delivered the Thomas Vicary Lecture on "The Norwich Schools of Surgey" before the College in October 1975.
