About this work

Description

Correspondence concerning conflict beween William Cooper & Nephews and The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. The file comprises:

15 February, 1895. Legal Opinion of Mr H Tindall Atkinson (Temple) concerning an objection to the wording of an advertisement for Cooper's Sheep Dipping Powder which states that it is "prepared only by the original inventor". The statement is open to objection, the firm is advised, because "Mr William Cooper is dead and the powder cannot be prepared by him". In addition, the RCVS objected ("conduct disgraceful") to the use of MRCVS in the firm's advertising, and to the statement, inferred by the wording, that Membership extended to the firm.

The objectionable promotional slip for Cooper's Sheep Dipping Powder, and the firm's "disgraceful" self-description (William Cooper and Nephews, for Sixty Years, Members of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons"), with suggested changes.

31 October, 1900. Letter from A R Chamberlayne (Solicitor) to William Cooper & Nephews, enclosing Tindall Atkinson's Opinion and supporting its advice.
