Description

Photograph of an illustration from De Materia Medica by Dioscorides, a 6th century Greek manuscript also known as the Juliana Anicia Codex, held by the Austrian National Library, Vienna. The illustration depicts Heuresis, the personification of invention or discovery, holding a mandrake being drawn by an artist and Dioscorides seated to the right, writing a description, with decorative border. Another photograph of this image was accessioned by the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum on 17th September 1935 (PHO 4692). Related images: M0007070, M0007069
