Biographical note
The charity CONCERN for the Mentally Ill was set up in 1989 (charity no.1002790) by Dr Doris Hollander and Dr Malcolm Weller, to promote and protect health and welfare provision for people with mental illness. Following psychiatric care reforms, and the introduction of community care policies in Britain, CONCERN worked to raise awareness of the challenges that people with mental illness experience, and the relationship between between poor psychatric welfare provision, homlessess and crime. The charity was particularly concerned with the closure of Friern Hospital in the London Borough of Barnet and other psychiatric hospitals, before adequate health and welfare provision was put in place. Membership was open to all and included health and social care professionals, religious leaders, voluntary agencies, members of the Prison Officer's Association, mental health care service users and their families, friends and carers.
