Description
Journal of Reeve's continental travels, mainly in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Included are accounts of visits to hospitals and other medical institutions, and of conversations with doctors and scientists. In particular Reeve visited Halle (where he discussed subjects such as galvanism, phrenology, vaccination, and the ideas of Schelling with Johann Christian Reil and other University professors, ff. 16-28), Leipzig (where he visited the anatomy theatre and museum, and saw Franz Joseph Gall, ff. 30-41), Yverdun (where he visited the school established by J H Pestalozzi, ff. 68-69), Vienna (where he visited Haydn, met the anatomist Georgius Prochaska and other professors, and saw a lunatic asylum, ff. 92-125), and Berlin (where he met Alexander von Humboldt and visited the Charité hospital, ff. 133-142).
