Sir Philip Manson-Bahr, CMG,DSO,MD,FRCP (1881-1966)

Sir Philip Manson-Bahr was born Philip Henry Bahr, but took the name “Manson-Bahr” some years after his marriage in 1909 to Edith Manson, daughter of Sir Patrick Manson.

He led the Stanley expedition to Fiji in 1909, investigating filariasis, elephantiasis and dysentery, and in the First World War served with the RAMC in Gallipoli, Egypt, Palestine and Syria. In Palestine he organised malaria diagnosis stations, for which work he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order.

In later years he became Director of the Clinical Division of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and was President of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 1947-1949.
