For the naming of the mosquito, see Robert Rhodes James, Henry Wellcome (1994): "Wellcome was now moving in very exalted company, having been appointed a member of the General Council of Gordon College, whose other members included Kitchener, Cromer, Wingate, Lord Rothschild and Sir Ernest Cassel. He undertook to publish the reports of the Tropical Research Laboratories' work, and did so with his customary lavishness. In his honour a new species of mosquito discovered by Balfour, captured after it had 'boarded the steamer in the evening at Baro, and bit freely,' was named Anopheles wellcomei" (pp. 291-292).
