Acquisition note

Sir Almroth Wright's papers were reported to have been destroyed by his wife after his death. A few items survived, including the material listed here, which was presented by his grandson, G J Romanes, to the Contemporary Medical Archives Centre in four batches, numbers 1 and 5-10 in 1985, and number 11 in 1987. Numbers 2-4 were received with the papers of Leonard Colebrook in 1993. They were marked `To go to Giles Romanes after my death (or senility) L Colebrooke', and transferred with the approval of the depositor, The Royal College of Physicians. A certificate from the Warsaw Medical Society was also transferred from the Colebrook papers, and integrated into file 11.

Wright was Professor of Pathology at the Army Medical School, 1892-1902, Pathologist at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, 1902-1927, and Director of Bacteriology under the Medical Research Council during the First World War. He pioneered vaccine therapy, most famously in the treatment of typhoid.
