This collection comprises diaries and notebooks, including ornithological, entomological, variological [1910]-1927; research notebooks, common cold and influenza, 1930-1933; notes on international congresses, 1950s-1960s. This material was catalogued in 1995. A second accession received in 2001 comprised papers relating to Sir Christopher Andrewes' work on classification and nomenclature of viruses, 1950s-1990s; plus material relating to a memoir of Andrewes by David Tyrrell. This material was catalogued in 2014.

Both accessions were received via Dr David Tyrell, the first on 02/07/1991 and the second 30/04/2001.

These papers were received by the Wellcome Library in 1991 from Dr David Tyrrell, former Director of the Medical Research Council Common Cold Unit, of which Sir Christopher was a founder. Andrewes, a prominent virologist, was Deputy Director of the National Institute for Medical Research from 1952-1961. A World Influenza Centre, supported by the World Health Organisation in collaboration with the Medical Research Council, was set up in 1947 in the Department of Virus Research at the National Institute for Medical Research, with Sir Christopher as director.

Other entomological notebooks were passed to the Royal Entomological Society by Dr John Andrewes, Sir Christopher's son.
