Notes
Part of the film collection comprising of 55 items donated by Nuffield Department of Anaesthetics, Oxford, to the Wellcome Trust in 2008. In 1937, Lord Nuffield established a clinical chair of anaesthesia in Oxford amidst some controversy that anaesthesia was even an academic discipline. The collection is a mixture of clinical and educational films made or held by the department to supplement their teaching dating from the late 1930s onwards.
Note from the catalogue which accompanied the collection: These two films were seen at the Ritz Cinema in 1958. An approach was made to the manager, Mr Bowden, who very willinging presented the original 35mm films [note most likely the distribution print shown at this venue] and we have had reductions made. Total running time about 10 minutes. The film shows the Duke of Edinburgh at St. Edmund Hall and then briefly opening Nuffield College. The second part consists of the presentation of the Golden Heart. Beyond Winston Churchill Lord Nuffield is the only other Englishman to receive this award which previously has always gone to Americans. The award is presented by Prince Philip.
