The mantelpiece is crowded with a variety of ornaments indicating the taste of the ill-matched couple. The book in the stewards' pocket has the title of a short sermon by George Whitfield (1714-1770), "The Nature and Necessity Of Our New Birth in Jesus Christ" (1737), which shows him to be a Methodist or an "Enthusiast" and follower of a Puritanical sect
