"Mental illness is a problem which affects us all, if not as patients or as bystanders, then as consumers of goods and services - it is a major cause of industrial inefficiency and absence from work, pushing up costs and prices. And yet it is an 'underground illness'. I have always believed this and this conviction has been reinforced by the preparation of this report which I have titled 'Masks and Mirrors of Mental Illness'. The masks of mental illness take many forms. They are worn by patients because mental illness carries a stigma. They are worn by relatives to protect the victims from prejudice both in the community and at work. They are wiorn by employers who do not make public the results of investigations into stress at work. They are worn by politicians and by civil servants for whom mental illness means expense - and even by the medical profession, in the interest of confidentiality. I have set out to show that there are many more masks than mirrors of mental illness, ie. visible signs. My report is based largely on two other reports prepared on the initiative of the National Westminster Bank."--From Preface.
