About this work

Description

Magazine insert (a single sheet advertisement printed separately then bound in with the magazine at the publisher's) issued in about 1892 by the Medical Battery Company, whose showrooms (below the Electropathic Zander Institute which offered electricity based therapies) are shown in a line illustration on the reverse of this. The advertisement focuses on the firm’s magnetic, or electric, corsets (price only 5/6d, post free), said to be beneficial in cases of nervous depression, rheumatism, weak back, sleeplessness, loss of appetite and "organic disorders". Electricity was something new and strange to the general public and was seized upon in many ways for commercial and therapeutic purposes. Magnetic therapy was often used in a similar context at the time and involved clothing (corsets, socks, belts etc.) embedded with a lot of magnets whose electromagnetic fields were supposed to have beneficial effects and are still used in complementary therapies today. The image shows a woman with pinned up dark hair wearing a blue corset adjusting that of a younger woman with a mass of blond hair hanging down to her buttocks in front of an oval mirror in either a bedroom or boudoir.
