Hence certainly the reafon why fuch waters cannot be car¬ ried in perfection, to a diftance; and why it has been propofed, with a view to preferve their virtues, that a fmall quantity of elixir, or acid of vitriol, lhould be added to them at the time of bottling; which, however, though it render their chalybeate properties more permanent, occalions a material alteration in the nature of the com¬ pound, from which thefe properties arife. In the fame manner we explain, why it was neceffary that a certain time lhould elaple before the colour of fyrup of violets was altered in experiment 5th, and why the boiling was fo effectual in producing the ochry depofit (experi¬ ments 15th, 16th, and 22d).
