    of the alteration of temperature, and the ftrong propenlity of this acid to affume an elaftic form. But, however diftindt thefe may ap¬ pear upon examination, we mull not be too hafty in inferring that they exift fo in the compofition of the water; on the contrary, we have reafon to fufpedt that both the phlogifticated and com¬ mon air were here produced from the decompofition of aerial acid: for it is found by experiment, that where this fubftance has been imbibed by water, and afterwards feparated by the appli¬ cation of heat, it always leaves a reli- duum, on being agitated with lime-water, correfponding very exactly in its pro¬ perties with that above referred to. Be that as it may, it is this volatile acid which beyond all difpute gives folubi- lity to the calx of iron, with which thefe waters are impregnated; a circumftance which heft accounts for many other im- E
