    let him add but a fingle drop of folution of nitrated lilver, and he will prefently be convinced how far chymical divifion goes beyond the power of any other means the art of man has ever yet devifed. The next thing our experiments teach us, is the prefence of a quantity of vi- triolated, lime or felenite. This appears on the fimple evaporation of the water (experiment 21ft), and explains very fatisfactorily the refult of experiment the 7th; feeing it is the property of heavy earth, or barytes, as it is called, to unite with vitriolic acid, whenever it meets it, and to form therewith a very heavy and infoluble compound. Should it be afked why the acid of fugar, as delicate a teft of lime as ba¬ rytes is of vitriolic acid, did not detedd the lime of the felenite, in experiment the 6th and 17th; the anfwer is, that it < was not allowed fufficient time to pro¬ duce its effects.
