![[ 2° ] of muriatic acid (experiment 8th) partly combined with magnefia (experiment aoth), and partly with fojjil alkali (ex¬ periment 21 ft): in other Avords, mu- riated magnefta and common fait; for we know that the prefence of muria¬ tic acid in folution is concealed Avith great difficulty, there being feAv bodies in nature which combine more readily, or more minutely, than this and calx of lilver, Avhile the properties of the com¬ pound which they form are fo remark¬ able, that it is next to impoflible to mif- take them. One of the moft charac- teriftic of thefe, viz. the change of co¬ lour upon expofure to light, the preci¬ pitate (experiment 8th) was found to poflefs; which, A\hen connected with the decompofition refulting from the application of the vitriolic acid to the refiduum left by the alcohol (experi¬ ment 20th) puts the matter beyond all kind of doubt.
