    Meteorological Station, Buxton. To the Mayor, Members of the Council & Burgesses. Mr. Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen, I have not very much pleasure in presenting the annual meteorological report for 1954> the sooner we forget it, the better. There are however, one or two brighter notes. In each of four months. May, October, November and December, the temperature was above the average, and in March and April the rainfall was below normal. Unfortunately the year as a whole v/as colder and wetter than the average, with considerably less sunshine. The rainfall reached the grand total of 1626,8 mm (64 ins) on 257 days. The year’s worst was 35*3 nim (1.39 ins) on January 20th, ApriJ. was the driest month, only 22,3 mm (0,8? ins) falling, on 9 days. In November, the wettest month, we had 219*3 nm (8,63ins), August was the warmest month, but the highest temperature on any one day was reached on September 1st, when the thermometer registered 77^* March 2nd had the distinction of being the coldest day, with the mercury dropping to 11° (21 degrees of frost). The sun recorder v;as not overworked during the year. We could register only 918,6 hours of sufficient intensity to char the suncard, although as usual there were many hours of sunshine partially veiled by a light haze, therefore unrecorded. The sunniest day was April 19th v'jen wo registered 11,7 hours - a very unimpressive figure. The winds ran true to form, the prevailing wind coming from the SoW, I should like to express mr thanks to rry deputy, Mr, Burton, and his staff; also to members of the Borough Engineer’s Department, and the Sloipes ground sta.?f for making it possible for me to reach the instruments during deep snow, and for help in maintaining the station. As usual, there have been numerous visits to the station, by schools and individuals, and many students make use of the data which is tabulated and preserved locally, in addition to the detailed t^iles at the Air Ministry.
