Creator/production credits

Frame label bears old attribution to George Lance (1802-1864). A painting of this composition signed "L. Isabey" (i.e. Louis Gabriel Eugène Isabey) and dated "184[1 or 8?]" is in the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille (Le cabinet de l'alchimiste, Inv. P. 482, Legs de Mme Maracci, 1901, on canvas 66.5 x 99 cm., i.e. the same size as the present version). A copy of the central part of the composition, around the alchemist, is in the Musée national Magnin at Dijon (L'alchimiste, no. 1938 F 41, on canvas 46 x 55.5 cm.)
