Description
According to Chaloner Smith, loc. cit., possibly a bust of Solon published by Thomas Bowles later republished by John Bowles as a bust of Galen; mentioned as Galen in John Bowles's catalogue of 1768
Bust in niche. Bust directed to left, but depicted as if (though stone) it has turned to the front to face the viewer

Lettering
Galen. A most excellent physitian ... and is numbered by Carden, among ye 12 most subtil wits of ye world. He was of a weak and crazy constitution, yet, by temperance preserved his life to great age. He died about the middle of the second century. P.P. Rubens del. Ex marmore antiquo. J. Faber senr. fecit.
Creator/production credits
According to the lettering, by John Faber after Rubens. Faber executed seven mezzotint portrait busts of ancients after Rubens: Cicero, Democritus, Demosthenes, Hippocrates, Plato, Seneca, and Socrates (van der Meulen, op. cit.). Apparently unable to find a Rubens portrait of Galen, he or his publisher surreptitiously used as their model an etching by Jan Lutma the younger of his father, and attributed it to Rubens
