Description
Documentary looking at public health before and leading up to the introduction of the National Health Service. Former nurses and doctors give their views on life before and after the NHS. Topics covered by the programme include hospitals, dental treatment and false teeth, the civilian casualties of the Spanish Civil War leading to the Emergency Medical Scheme in Britain, William Beveridge's report, Aneurin Bevan ordering plans for nationalising hospitals, BMA vote on Bevan's proposals, introduction of the NHS in 1948, public demand on the service, introduction of NHS charges and the fall of the Labour government in 1951, though by then the NHS was firmly established.
