About this work

Description

The subject includes the "Lactatio Bernardi", the squirting of the Virgin's breast-milk on to the saint. Left, a palm-tree with coats of arms. On the left three popes sail towards Saint Bernard: Eugenius III, Benedict XII and Gregory X, of which the first two were Cistercians. The mast of their ship bears a banderolle lettered "Vivat Cistercium mater ordinis" (long live Cîteaux the mother of the order). The river on which they are sailing is labelled with the words "De plenitudine eius omnes accepimus" (of his fullness we have all received). The river is fed by cascades labelled with names, many of them Spanish
