Description

A portrait of modern village life as lived by an African family narrated in English (although scenes in the village school indicate that French is spoken there). The film is about parental guidance. It dramatises the everyday interactions and tensions between people; the father is exhorted to stop school for his children. Meanwhile, in a separate narrative a boy who has dropped out of school snoops on a wealthy part of town and considers his future, valuing his freedom but with little prospects due to his lack of education. Back in the village, a man tells his nephew to stick with his friends and not fall into bad habits. At the end of the day, education is discussed by the men. A mother and daughter talk about growing up, cooking and housekeeping. Interactions between the generations is important. After school, a group of children are drinking alcohol and smoking against the wishes of their parents and what they have taught at school (two of the children are very young). When the children, return and the son is very drunk; his father beats him. An ugly argument ensues involving both parents and children. The next day, the father complains to the school. It is observed that young people may feel uninvolved in society and drop out; a group of officials discuss this. Schools are considered to be key in delivering the message. Back in the village, the two families discuss the problems with their children. In the village square village life continues with music and dancing.
