For identification of Combe as translator, see DNB (s.v. Combe) and H.W. Hamilton, 'Doctor Syntax', London, 1969, p. 328. BM Cat. and DNB (s.v. Hunter) attribute the translation to "Monk, of the Royal Marines", but no such officer appears in the Corps records.
