About this work
Description
Endometriosis is the subject of this programme from a series on women's health problems. The condition has always been little understood and difficult to diagnose. Tissue from the lining of the womb, normally carried out of the body by the menstrual flow, remains, often blocking the fallopian tubes and escaping into the abdomen, causing severe pain. School, work, family and social life can be badly affected by this condition which may also result in infertility. Here, women describe the repeated surgery and changes of medication they have undergone as they struggle to cope with endometriosis. Prof. Chris Sutton assesses the present state of knowledge about it and is shown carrying out laser surgery on one patient. Perhaps the most famous woman to suffer from this condition was Marilyn Monroe. The history of her illness, with film clips, is a point of reference throughout the programme.
