About this work
Description
This informative programme looks at all aspects of organ donation, from the procurement of organs from a dead body to the results in the recipient of the donated organs. Matthew Fergussen, a 17-year-old boy who suffered major head injuries in a car accident and was pronounced dead at Walsgrave Hospital, Coventry, donates his heart, lungs, kidneys and liver. His family speak about Matthew's wishes and how he always carried a donor card. We see the work of donor coordinator Susan Richards as she deals with the family's grief and wishes, coordinates the donor retrieval teams and performs the final acts of care on Matthew's body. At Papworth Hospital we follow the story of Ron Carter, a 59-year-old on the urgent heart transplant list. The work of retrieval surgery and recipient coordinator Cheryl Riotto is shown in detail as is the transplant operation for Ron.
