The three dissections of the brain had earlier been designed by Pierre Tarin and painted by Gautier d'Agoty ca. 1748: Gautier d'Agoty's print after his own painting of Tarin's designs was published in his Anatomie de la tête en tableaux imprimés, Paris 1748, pl. 6; the dissections were published in Tarin's own Adversaria anatomica, Paris 1750, and they were republished for a wider audience in the Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers, plate volume 1762. The remainder of the composition of the present painting has not, or not yet, been found in any of Gautier d'Agoty's prints
