About this work

Description

Jeremy Vine introduces a report on the difficulty of getting medicines in some areas of the country. Shelley Jofre takes to the road and meets people who have not been able to get the best treatments because of where they live. Naomi Kiely has an aggressive form of cancer and can't receive Avastin, a drug which is her last chance. NICE have to approve the use of the drug and then it depends on the primary care trust itself as to whether they will fund the drug in an exceptional circumstance. Manchester seems to be a particularly reluctant primary care trust, unfortunately this is where Naomi lives. Anand Sharma is in a very similar situation to Naomi and if he offers to pay for Avastin privately he will be forced to also pay for all his treatment, no longer entitled to receive anything on the NHS. Other similar cases are shown. Author Terry Pratchett has alzheimer's and has to pay for his own medication, Aricept.
