The tree of life. On either side of the river was there the Tree of Life which bare twelve manner of fruits. Chap. XXII, 2 ... Tree bears fruit labelled, from bottom up: "Temperance. Wisdom. Virtue. Meekness. Holiness. Truth. Joy. Peace. Love. Faith. Charity. Hope"

Compare with the original idea for this print, by J. Bakewell in the late eighteenth century (Wellcome Library no. 26772i). Many features of the design have changed, unlike those of its companion print (Wellcome Library no. 26799i), which faithfully copies its original, apart from divergence in the evaluation of sin. But here too, virtue is seen to have changed in the intervening century
