About this work
Description
Card advertising the services of Hammond's Optical Service Ltd., "North London's leading opticians" at 248 Hoe Street, Walthamstow, E.17 (adjoining Lyons Tea Shop) with other branches across north-east London at Tottenham, Edmonton, Harringay, Kings Cross, Muswell Hill, Enfield and Ilford. The card shows a photograph of the shop front with posters along the tops of both windows declaring "Broken lenses accurately matched & replaced while you wait" and "National health insurance opticians" (the National Insurance Act was passed in Great Britain in 1911). Large pairs of glasses with female eyes behind the lenses stare out from the shop windows, suspended above the displays. The card is undated but what looks like a display card or plaster display head in one of the windows has a typically late 1920s hairstyle. The back serves as a card to mark to be used when playing progressive whist, a popular card game at the time and was a common way of advertising services or products.
