About this work

Description

This zine is one of nine hand made books that formed the installation 'View from the High Ground' by Dana Walrath in 2016. The installation signified dehumanization - the fourth of genocide's ten stages - as an interactive process. The piece focused on nine of the genocides of the past 500 years: Genocides of American Indians, African Americans, Australian Aborigines, Armenians, the Holocaust, genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and the genocide of Rohingya in Myanmar. Each book uses the pages of an old zoology text, and were arranged in chronological order, embedded in slate and placed on a tall white washed wood tabletop supported by pipes and furnace parts as part of the installation. These books, and the ability to interact with them, forces the viewer to experience dehumanization, to literally feel their hand in it, as they leaf through the images.--Summarised from author's website. http://viewfromthehighground.com
