About this work

Description

Magazine insert advertising Hall's Coca Wine, a tonic wine made from the leaves of the Erythroxylon Coca plant. Sir Robert Christison is mentioned as being an early advocate of coca as a medicine. The wine is a restorative, especially after influenza and combats sleeplessness, bronchitis, neuralgia, anaemia, mental fatigue, exhaustion and menstrual disorders ("sickness, so common to ladies"). The front is an illustration by Dudley Hardy, dated 1915. It shows a young woman in a japanese style in an ornate yellow dress with a short cape, flowers in her hair against a swirl of red.
