Biographical note
The author has been termed the 'Father of Ovariotomy' and qualified at Edinburgh in 1823. After some years of practice in Ashton-under-Lyne, in 1839 he moved to Manchester, where he made his first ovariotomy in 1842. He was also a keen archaeologist, geologist and numismatist. [Cf. 'Lancet' 1893, ii, pp. 845, 846].
