About this work
Description
A detailed account of the work of the burns research unit at University College, London, funded jointly by the NHS and the Phoenix Appeal and run by Professor Angus McGrouther. It draws attention to the range of skills required by the surgeon: a craftsman's expertise in manipulating human tissue, a high degree of theoretical knowledge, and the ability to empathise with patients whose distress may continue long after their injuries have physically healed. Skin grafting on an electrical burns victim is shown (this will not appeal to the squeamish) and patients speak of the social and psychological problems resulting from the post-surgery disfigurement.
