Description

Correspondence and notes relating to Thomas Alva Edison, chiefly centring on his visit to the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1889, and in particular to the pavilion run by the newspaper Le Figaro. Much of the latter material is by or to the editor of the Figaro, Gaston Calmette.

The material in this file divides as follows:

1-3: Letters, signed, by Edison. 1879-1899.

4: Letter, signed, from a member of Edison's staff to Gaston Calmette. 1889.

5: Printed sheet commemorating Edison's visit on August 13 1889 to the Figaro pavilion at the Eiffel Tower, bearing the signatures of the various persons present (Edison himself the first). 1889.

6-8: Letters, signed, to Calmette, relating to Edison's visit and his inventions. 1889-1890 and n.d.

9: Handwritten notes, probably by Calmette, relating to Edison and his inventions: possibly drafts for a welcoming speech or an article. 23 sheets. c.1889.
