About this work

Description

Bible. O.T. 1 Samuel 17. David stands with one foot upon a book with the words "Ewige Fama" written upon its sides, the other upon a stone inscribed "Fictor". A bear and a lion lie prone on each side of him. His sword's handle, in the shape of a bird's head, carries the inscription "Geloria". The central scene shows Goliath prostrate, with David unsheathing an enormous sword to behead him; a discarded rope lies nearby. The soldiers on horseback in the distance surround a ruin, while the soldiers near David appear to be in unfocussed discussion
