About this work

Description

Sawney sits beneath a draped canopy in highland costume. Two books entitled 'North Briton' and 'Monitor' lie on a table beside Sawney. The figures are labelled A-F and described in the text below. The ghosts appear amidst a cloud of smoke at their feet with speech bubbles that refer to their status. Sawney retorts 'By St Andrew these ill far'd ghoists gar my blood run cauld with horror! gin I were safe in my own country. Ise be content to feed on bannocks & haggies as I were want to do.' Beside him another speech bubble urges 'Fly Sawney to the middle of Wallachia & in its blissful vales forget your fears.' On the walls behind are two oval framed pictures, including one of Bonnie Prince Charlie, the Young Pretender, on the right? One of many caricatures of the Highlanders during the Highland rebellion of 1745
