About this work
Description
Benhaven is an American residential school in Connecticut (described in the film as a community) for children with autism. Amy Lettick, the Founder/Director talks about the school. An interesting feature of the school is that many of the children, although not deaf, are taught and communicate in sound language. A child with poor spatial awareness is taught to navigate play equipment by means of a lead rope. Older children are taught how to brush their teeth. With older teens, some children are taught simple clerical duties. Research studies take place in the school to try and understand what the lived (biological) experience of autism is (polygraphs indicate pulse rate, for example). There is a farm. Other exercises and activities are practised.
