About this work
Description
Leaflet (possibly late 18th century) advertising Epsom magnesia or Epsom salts made from the mineral waters of the well at Epsom (discovered in 1618), where people can also go to drink the waters. These are on sale at D. Ingram's shop in Arundel Street, off the Strand, London. The salts are supposed to have had a calming effect as well as a purgative one and cured: digestive disorders, infant fever, heartburn, headache, costiveness, scurvy, complaints in breeding, weaknesses of the sex, eye inflammation, red face, jaundice, biliousness, scorbutic blotches and were one of the best preparatives for inoculation and essential when smallpox is about.
