About this work
Description
The first in a two-part series which provides valuable information as to how the NHS heart transplant process works. 21-year-old Jenna found out she had dilated cardiomyopathy, a rare and life-threatening heart condition. We see her undergo a heart transplant operation and follow her recovery. We also follow Peter Field who has been in Harefield Hospital for four months and who also has dilated cardiomyopathy and is surviving on a VAD machine - if he improves too much he will return home without a transplant but if he deteriorates too much he could end up too ill to survive the operation. At the start of the programme he is too ill to undergo surgery, but by the end he is too well and is sent home with the VAD. Sharon Beer, senior transplant coordinator at Harefield Hospital, provides much insight into the intricacies of who does and who doesn't make it onto the transplant list.
