The genius of Charles Darwin. Part 3, God strikes back.

Presented by Richard Dawkins, this is the last in a three-part series looking at Charles Darwin's theory of evolution through the process of natural selection. This part looks in particular at the backlash of Darwinism, confronting those who stand aggressively opposed to his theories, in particular those who are keen to maintain religious belief. The programme begins by looking at Darwin's own crisis of faith and his anxiety at publishing his theories at an historical moment when religion was a key part of life. Dawkins speaks to Creationist John Mackay and Evangelical leader Wendy Wright; both deny the presence of real evidence to back up evolution. Dawkins visits a paleontology lab to look at bones, and diagrams are used to show the changes in bone structure from generation to generation. The evolution of the eye in animals and humans is shown in detail and used as an example to highlight the imperfections of the human body which has been compromised during the process of evolution. How the theory of evolution is taught in schools is looked at and Dawkins quizzes a group of secondary school teachers as to why they are cautious of promoting evolution as the absolute truth. Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury, describes how evolutionary theory is incorporated into the Church of England's beliefs these days. Finally the question is posed that if one does accept a Godless universe, how does one find consolation? Dawkins meets philosopher Daniel Dennett a confirmed athiest who recently faced death himself.
