Description

General y Doctor Manuel B. Márquez Escobedo, born at La Casa China, Comonfort (Chamacuero, Guanajuato), Mexico, 27 February 1896; died Comonfort (Chamacuero, Guanajuato), 21 April 1973. He studied medicine at the Escuela Médico Militar, Mexico City, and graduated in 1923 in medicine, surgery and obstetrics with the rank of Major. He pursued his studies at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore (public health), Tulane University in New Orleans (tropical medicine), and the Istitituto di Sanità Pubblica in Rome (malariology). He held offices in academic and public organizations in Mexico, and as Director General of the Comisión Nacional para la Erradicación del Paludismo, he was responsible for campaigns against malaria in Mexico (information kindly supplied by Mr Manolo Márquez, August 2016)
