About this work

Description

Unshaded in the printed version. This design is intended to illustrate differences in the projection of the upper lip. The leftmost image shows the lip projecting well beyond the lower: Lavater denotes this as 'sentimental', showing goodness. The middle mouth has an equal projection, signifying honesty, sincerity, and trustworthiness. The right-hand mouth has a projecting bottom lip, expressing an irritable, yet temperate character
