About this work
Description
This documentary in two parts is about Broadmoor; the hospital and psychiatric prison historically known as a 'criminal lunatic asylum'. This programme gives unprecedented access to the hospital and its patients. Dr Morris Vinstock, consultant psychiatrist, brief his team about the new inmates, many are violent and have complex mental disorders. In the most acute, high dependency ward even delivering food is complicated. Leeanne McGee is the director of the hospital and takes the opportunity to serve food. Patients describe their history of abuse and self-harm. The nursing staff receive riot training; they have to be deployed 30 times a year. A substance abuse therapy group is in progress; substance abuse comes hand in hand with their mental state. Medication helps but isn't always willingly taken. The staff practice relational security; the staff learn to understand the inmates' voices. Two patients are given the hope that they will ultimately leave Broadmoor. The old Victorian buildings are due to be re-commissioned as a new purpose-built hospital is built nearby.
